Thrive founder Graham Gordon on why a score without an explanation is unfinished work

GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA, 22 September 2026: A recovery percentage can tell you where you stand without helping you decide what to do next. Graham Gordon, Co-Founder and CEO of Optihealth Group, believes that leaves the job unfinished.

As the Gold Coast company launches Thrive Health Band, Gordon is calling for a more useful approach to wearable technology: help people understand their readings in the context of their actual lives.

“Your wearable says you’re 63% recovered. What are you supposed to do with that?”

“A score without an explanation leaves the hard part to you. If we give someone a number, we should help them understand what it means, what might be influencing it and what they could try next.”

For Gordon, the issue is the gap between collecting information and making it useful. A person balancing work, children, night shifts or caring responsibilities needs more than a daily score.

“Looking after yourself should not feel like another performance review.”

Start with the person

A lower recovery reading becomes more useful when someone can explore it alongside their recent sleep, activity and how they feel.

Three nights of shorter sleep might be relevant. So might a change in routine or a demanding week. Those connections need context, and the available information will not always explain every change.

A new parent, a shift worker and a carer may also have very different options for what they can do next. Advice needs to fit the day they actually have.

“Self-care is not a scoreboard. Real life is messy. The job of a wearable is to help you understand your body and make a manageable decision about your day.”

From a reading to a conversation

Thrive brings together a wearable band, the Thrive app and the My Health web portal. It connects sleep, recovery, vitals and activity with the everyday context people record, including meals, mood, energy and symptoms.

The platform learns what is usual for each person, building a personal baseline that develops as more readings and context become available.

Through Ask Thrive, users can ask questions in ordinary language: “How has my recovery changed?” “What seems to affect my sleep?” “How have my activity levels changed this week?”

Ask Thrive helps users explore patterns in their own information and consider practical changes to their routines. Its answers reflect the information available, including when there is too little to draw a useful conclusion.

“The question we keep coming back to is: does this help the person understand something useful about themselves? That is the standard we are building towards.”

Launching with World Gym Australia

Alongside its direct-to-consumer launch, Thrive is launching with World Gym Australia, which has more than 60 clubs across the country.

The rollout into participating clubs gives members the option to share selected information with their personal trainer through Thrive Loops. Trainers can use that context alongside strength programs and training plans to support conversations about progress, sleep and recovery.
